About the San Francisco Social Security Disability/SSI Advocacy Team:
BayLegal’s San Francisco Social Security Disability/SSI Advocacy Team is a collaborative, interdisciplinary legal team that includes attorneys and social workers who assist individuals with physical, mental, and cognitive disabilities in obtaining Social Security Disability, SSI, and CAPI benefits. The team engages in community outreach and works closely with the San Francisco Human Services Agency, community-based organizations, and healthcare providers to support clients in securing benefits and achieving long-term stability.

As a Supervising Attorney you will have the opportunity to: lead and support our San Francisco Social Security Disability/SSI Advocacy Team. This role is responsible for supervising legal and social work staff, managing advocacy efforts, and ensuring the effective delivery of legal services. The Supervising Attorney will provide strategic leadership, oversee case management, and collaborate with key stakeholders to enhance service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise, mentor, and support attorneys and social workers in delivering high-quality legal advocacy and social work services.
  • Oversee litigation, direct representation, policy advocacy, and outreach efforts, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical obligations.
  • Provide case strategy guidance and legal oversight, including reviewing pleadings, co-counseling cases, and reviewing supervisees’ cases.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to assess case progress, coordinate interdisciplinary services, discuss legal strategies, and address emerging challenges.
  • Carry a small caseload, and cover team cases as needed.
  • Collaborate with the San Francisco Human Services Agency and other community partners to improve service delivery and client outcomes.
  • Develop and implement training programs to enhance staff expertise in Social Security Disability and related legal matters.
  • Ensure accurate case documentation and compliance with grant and funding requirements.
  • Participate in local, state, and federal policy discussions that impact disability benefits advocacy.
  • In coordination with San Francisco’s Managing Attorney and Office Manager, provide backup for duties related to oversight and support of the San Francisco office, and participate in project work that furthers the interest of BayLegal’s mission and operations.
  • Contribute to organizational initiatives, including grant compliance, data collection, and reporting.
Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in the California State Bar (or eligibility to obtain admission within a reasonable period).
  • Minimum of five years of relevant legal experience, including experience litigating Social Security disability claims. One or more years of supervisory experience, required (preferred for internal candidates)
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in a legal setting.
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and legal research skills.
  • Ability to develop legal strategies that prioritize client needs and adhere to principles of fairness and impartiality.
  • Experience working with individuals facing economic hardships and barriers to legal representation.
  • Commitment to fostering a professional and respectful workplace culture that values diverse perspectives and experiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to travel within San Francisco to meet clients and oversee team activities in the community.

BayLegal has health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure.  BayLegal has an evolving plan to continue to safely increase in-person services and activities in our offices and community-based advocacy sites.  BayLegal employees are expected to work on-site and in-person three (3) days per week and as needed for client services and office staffing needs.  Employees may work remotely from home on a part-time basis.  Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location, and to other service-delivery locations as needed, during the standard work week.

Compensation and Benefits: We offer a diverse, family-friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with a generous benefits package. The estimated starting annual salary range for this position is: $105,000 - 135,000 (placement in range determined primarily by years of related experience). BayLegal's benefits package includes 100% employer covered medical, dental, and life insurance for employees and up to 60% for dependents; long term disability insurance; stipends for bilingual employees whose language skills are used in the provision of work tasks; student debt repayment program; dependent childcare employer contribution program and 401k retirement plan following first year. The paid leave policy includes sick leave; parental leave; 15 holidays each year and vacation (starting at 13 days and increasing with additional years of employment).

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work Environment: This position is primarily sedentary and currently hybrid remote. When in the office, the applicant can expect to be working at a desk in a temperature-controlled office, in a modular space or individual office. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
